I have been slowly adding to my battery runtime vs brightness page as time goes on. In this chart it becomes obvious that lights like the Photons, or other small coin cell lights, LED Flashlight may initially be brighter then lights that use larger batteries (Arc AAA) the light with the larger cells will soon be brighter then the LED flashlights. This is also true taking the next step to "C" cells or even "D" cells.
Another new type of light is the truly regulated light like Opalec Newbeam or soon to be released Surefire KL1, they maintain the initial brightness for much of their useful life, not dimming as time passes, and I believe this is the next step in LED flashlight evolution. LED Power Light This also allows us to use any type or size of battery (Ni-MH, Ni-Cad, alkaline, Li-Ion and so on) and get the same brightness, the battery type and size then just effect runtime rather then brightness.
All the images below are taken at 1/2 second with both the camera and light at 5 feet. Since most of the lights use AA batteries I used the same 4 AA batteries and switched them between to make sure they were all the same for these images.
