The Romeo Downtown Development Authority is still only discussing the switch. Some in the committee are concerned that the light fixtures will not support new brightest led flashlights technology and that the lights would be too bright. I hope the group talks to some of the other cities Adapting these new lights. They will see that LED light manufacturers have these concerns in mind and have already created the right LED bulbs for city use and are starting to make fixtures more affordable. I think these are minor concerns for Romeo which is only looking to update 79 street lights in its downtown business district. The peace of mind of having new energy-saving bulbs in place is a benefit in and of itself
The SureFire U2 Ultra Variable Power LED Flashlight has a 5-watt LED and six selectable levels of brightness, ranging from 2 to 100 lumens. The setting is Brightest multiple times brighter than my large Maglite flashlight.
The U2 Ultra tailcap switch can be pressed for Momentary-on and pressed further to click constant-on. A set of batteries can last up to 40 hrs of continuous use on the low brightness setting, see specifications below. I looked in both the manual and website but could not find how long a set of batteries will last on the Brightest level. So, I bet it’s not very long.

Various bezel fitters (red, blue, infrared, opaque, diffusion, and traffic wand) are available to expand the U2’s usability.
What might surprise some of you (this fact certainly amazed me - ..) is the cost of these SureFire flashlights. At $ 279 for the U2 Ultra and $ 299 for the Kroma, they are the most expensive flashlights I have ever heard of. Last month I did a review of the Brite Strike Tactical Illumination Tool and while it is a very nice led flashlights wholesale, I have to say both SureFire flashlights are definitely a step up in quality. So I went to visit my local Fry’s, Fred Meyer’s and Walmart stores to see what type of selection of LED flashlights were available. All of these retail stores had many (10) LED flashlights varying in size from small to moderate and ranging in cost from $ 10 to $ 50 But none these appeared to have near the quality of materials and construction or durability of the Kroma and U2 Ultra.
All that being said, if you have the need for a small compact flashlight that has the ability to produce white, red, and blue (Kroma), selectable levels of brightness (U2 Ultra), or if money is no object, you should consider a SureFire flashlight.
owned my first LED flashlight nearly ten years ago. It was a thumb sized keychain with a button-cell battery. Ever since, LED flashlights have developed further and today’s models have brighter and more LED lights.
Light-emitting diodes or LEDs are solid-state transistors which glow when a current passes through them. However, unlike incandescent flashlights, there are no filaments, and no bulbs. It does not burn, nor produce much heat. And best of all, it uses a small amount of energy.
The small energy footprint makes the best LED flashlight a very interesting proposition. It does not have to use a large power source to generate light and it does not generate lots of heat either. And since it’s solid-state, it has a long life span
Although regular LEDs come in a variety colors, the diodes used in flashlights usually have a bluish tinge. This is not really a impediment to having a bright flashlight. In fact, currently there are small projectors which have LEDs for the lighting element.
The titanium LED torch come in an array of sizes. There are the keychain models which are smaller than a finger, with flashlights using larger arrays of LEDs. Using multiple LEDs, the lamps of a size can be as large as any common flashlight, with a variety of designs. There was even one unit which make use a circular array of LEDs for a flashlight bulb inside the reflector unit, which also had a rectangular array on the side but without the reflector unit. This is great when outdoors, replacing portable battery powered fluorescent lights.
