LED technology application and development trend in the auto bulb

The lighting system on the car not only lets the driver understand the state of the car actually, having offered it in the course of safety drive even more, the condition that there must be. And new monobasic the intersection of light source and led, for a lot of consumers is not at all non- strange, has already further expanded and applied to the car, and in the face of different demands for efficiency according to each application, choose the suitable LED products. Basically, because LED and traditional light source are except except appearance difference on, only appearing has a very great difference to output with efficiency too, so, should apply LED to the auto bulb improving, including optics design and scattered thermal design, etc., different from the design concepts of the traditional car lamps and lanterns. Car and LED succeed in carrying on integration, becomes all brand-new design concepts of car making.

The light source of the car is occupying very important position in lighting field, its output accounts for about whole lighting source total output 10%. If change all the illumination of a car into LED, probably need to use 400- 600 LEDs. In fact, as early as 10 years ago, LED stepped to the journey marching into the car field. At present, LED has already exceeded 80% in the proportion of the domestic and foreign lighting source of completed car.

LED still has objections as the car very beginning light source

Therefore, the car body controls system control must be designed according to the lamp source of different power demands. Change pieces of angle, should spend, come, watch at car from LED, though LED in third brake light of applications, get the intersection of car and tail lamp, steering light get brake light, open LED, spend as light inside and outside train step by step.

On the car show of Beijing in 2010, BMW shows one is called GranCoupe four concepts roadster. GranCoupe appears under designing the atmosphere at night when BMW builds sedulously, ocular center leaves its LED headlampwith sharp model naturally. Not only BMW, Mercedes-Benz, audi, lexus have introduced the varied style of carrying LED headlamp. Release from Audi first adopt LED headlamp R8 have enough and to spare in 2 years, LED known as the 4th generation of car lighting source is appearing.

In marking and mixing LexusRX450h forum of LED headlamp, are discussing LED headlamp of RX450h warmly. ” Even it type in in front of on bumper bar of musical quality bus, under tangent getting lighter very light shapes blue too, even I only distinguish knowledge and magnanimity and is better than it in my headlamp. ” Actual effect that a net friend who meets RX450h on the way describes LED headlamp so. And another RX450h car owner refutes one, ” So long as who opens RX450h a car owner must be very clear, LED headlamp is superbright, focuses on very much, though does not seem too bright nearby. LED centralized than the intersection of HID and light source, traffic light stop, take the intersection of car and bumper bar in front, lay along very much on especially, very safely very bright when cutting into a mountain on the way. ” Car owner this pairs of B fan (BMW, Benz) originally ,Since this greatly changes Lexus.

In order to compare the characteristics of LED headlamp and HID, a meddler sends for two vehicles of style that former factory carries HID and LED headlight in 17 of at dusk even more: 30 test. Reveal in the test result from the cement wall 20m, LED headlamp is brighter than HID, but step back by some LED and not so good as HID headlamp.

LED consume the intersection of per unit and light output that electric energy produce really than the intersection of white heat and elevation of light, but single LED come than, the light output advantage of LED is not so outstanding. In order to obtain sufficient luminance, must adopt the way in which LED module lights. ” A LED module can not offer the sufficient light for passing light function of far light sum. So, you must near a plurality of LED module of far mere function application of light sum for each one. ” PaulDecloedt points out, it is the application of light beam because of the car headlight, each LED module needs an optical component (lens or optical reflector) . ” This is major cause why LED low beam light and far-reaching headlamp price are still relatively expensive. ” In addition, because the characteristic lighted in LED modularization causes the car regulation to be difficult to define and adopt LED headlamp of a plurality of module to be damaged.

Torches LED Bulb Torches vs

This is question I do not usually ask myself but if you look into the end of your torch you may be surprised what you see. More and more torches are being made with LED’s and not standard filaments but what are LED’s and why are they so much better? Being a Physics graduate these are questions I should be able to answer, so I will try!

Light Emitting Diodes or LED’s as they are more widely known create light by taking advantage of semiconductor physics. Now you do not need to know heavily on semiconductors other than the fact that their conductivity or the ability to allow an electric current passes through them can be manipulated to make them highly resistant to conducting electricity or electricity as a metal. The LED is a junction of two different types of semi-conductors, one that contains many positive charges, which contains many negative charges. This is called a pn (positive-negative) junction. Now, normally, these costs can not approach each other (aswe would expect positive and negative charges to do, attract) but if we apply a voltage across the LED using your AA batteries for example, we can push the positive and negative charges together. When the charges meet they anihalate with each other and the energy is released as light, brilliant!

So why is this better than your standard tungsten filament bulb. Well LED’s are lit solely by the movement of Electrons (the negative charges I have discussed) . They have no filament that will burn out, no toxic materials like mercury or radon gas are required in their production and last up to 60 times longer than incandescent bulbs according to howstuffworks.com. LED’s also do not suffer as dramatically from energy wastage as heat and so in the energy converting into light sense they are more efficient. However single LED’s are not as bright as normal bulbs and so you usually see a cluster of LED’s rather than a single one in any application. It is generally expected that LED’s will replace incandescent bulbs in the future but alot of work needs to go into making them brighter while keeping them cost effective.

So what does this mean for you and me, the consumers. Well LED’s are more economical, they just are. Heat is an incredible waste in a standard bulb and so any improvements we can make there will be worthwhile. For camping the slight loss in brightness from an LED torch will not be a problem and as you can see with a quick search on Amazon a very basic 17 LED Compact Torch retails for just £3.98! If you want to be more economical, perhaps make your batteries last that little bit longer and do your bit for the environment then choose LED. In fact why not be really environmentally friendly and combine the wind-up torch principle and LED lighting and purchase a LED wind-up torch like the Varta LED Dynamo light– Wind Up Torch .

The Brightest Headlamps

Headlamp technology improves year after year. LEDs, or Light Emitting Diodes, are the most popular choice for headlamps in 2010. These bulbs were once only used for wide-angle viewing, but now they are capable of long-distance lighting, as well. LEDs last a long time and are lightweight, making them great for headlamps. Most headlamp companies use LEDs of varying brightness and power, rather than using other types of bulbs, to satisfy almost anyone’s needs. Headlamps continue to evolve as the ability to make them lighter weight and to lengthen battery time improves. LEDs are the light source of choice for headlamps.
Power
Headlamps are also measured in watts, which considers the amount of power produced instantly by turning on the lamp. This measurement is usually easier for people to grasp, because standard household lamps use wattage. LEDs have a much lower wattage than regular incandescent bulbs in your house, though. The brightest headlamps area between 5 and 25 watts, which is incredibly bright, considering that an average compact headlamp is around 1 watt or less.

Brightness
One way to measure light is in lumens, which focuses on the light that is being emitted from an object, like a headlamp, and takes into account the human eye and its perception of brightness. Most headlamp companies measure their lights in lumens to give you an idea of the level of brightness to expect. Standard compact headlamps used by hikers often are between 30 and 70 lumens. There are two different types of LEDs regularly used: a single high-output LED or multiple, small standard LEDs that when combined make up the lumen value. The brightest headlamps currently measure between 250 and 1,850 lumens. These super-bright headlamps illuminate both wide areas and long distances.

LED bulbs

To save some money on your electrical bill, switching over to LED light bulbs in your home is an option. These LED light bulbs use less energy, and despite the increased upfront cost, save you money over their lifespan.
LED stands for light emitting diode. LEDs come in many different types depending what they are required to do. LEDs consist of semi-conducting diodes of an extremely small size that are clustered together to form an array of bulbs. The small size and low energy consumption of LED lighting offers portability and ease of use that lends itself to use in items ranging from computers to flashlights and bicycles. LEDs are also becoming more common in homes due to their low energy usage.

Energy Efficiency
LED light bulbs emit very little heat. This saves a lot of energy, as 98 percent of the energy used by a traditional incandescent light bulb can be lost as heat energy instead of light energy.

Life Of The Bulb
LED light bulbs last about 50 to 100 times as long as an incandescent light bulb. They also last about five to ten times as long as a fluorescent light bulb.

Durability
Having no filament or tube helps to make an LED light bulb last longer than an incandescent bulb. They also resist the effects of heat and cold much better than incandescent bulbs.

Safe Manufacturing
The dangerous element of mercury is used when creating an incandescent bulb. Mercury is not used when creating an LED light bulb. This reduces employee and environmental health concerns.

Battery Life
When using an LED light bulb in a flashlight instead of an incandescent bulb, the life of the batteries can be increased by 10 to 15 times.

How to buy a flashlight

There comes a time in everyone’s life where you need to use a flashlight. Whether you use it to illuminate a trick-or-treaters path or to shed some light until you locate the blown fuse in the fuse box, having a functioning flashlight is key. Here’s how to go about buying the right flashlight.

Choose what style of bulb fits your needs best. The bulb is the heart of the flashlight and determines brightness and range. Incandescent bulbs are the most common. These bulbs are cheap and provide adequate light. However, they can break easily if jostled or dropped. Because of that, many people are turning to LED flashlights. LEDs are praised most for their energy-saving abilities. Again, think about use. If you need a flashlight sporadically, go with an incandescent. If you’re more concerned with long-lasting light, choose an LED. You’ll also want to test out the flashlight’s range.

Decide what kind of batteries you want your flashlight to use. Most standard flashlights will use two to three C or D alkaline batteries, which are relatively cheap and definitely easy to find. Other choices include lithium batteries or rechargeable batteries. There are even solar-powered flashlights. The newest trend is “forever flashlights,” which don’t use batteries or lightbulbs. A tiny generator, activated by shaking the flashlight, powers it. Because nothing ever needs to be replaced, these flashlights are a good choice for someone who uses flashlights often.
Determine the style and size of flashlight you want. Flashlights can be made out of plastics or metals, which affects weight. Think of use. If you’ll be toting your flashlight outside or up ladders, you’ll want something compact and lightweight. For big jobs where a lot of light is needed, try a lantern style flashlight. Some people even prefer headlamp-style flashlights. Pen lights or mini flashlights are great for some projects and can be hooked to your keychain so you can always find them.

Headlamps

A headlamp is a lamp, usually attached to the front of a vehicle such as a car, with the purpose of illuminating the road ahead during periods of low visibility, such as darkness or precipitation. Headlamp performance has steadily improved throughout the automobile age, spurred by the great disparity between daytime and nighttime traffic fatalities: the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that nearly half of all traffic-related fatalities occur in the dark, despite only 25% of traffic travelling during darkness.

A headlamp can also be mounted on a bicycle (with a battery or small electrical generator), and most other vehicles from airplanes to trains tend to have headlamps of their own.

Headlamp technology improves year after year. LEDs, or Light Emitting Diodes, are the most popular choice for headlamps in 2010. A word about LED Dynamo light

LED Dynamo light systems offer exceptional reliability and superior light yield vs standard bicycle light systems. This is an evolutionary tutorial on how to power such systems from a dynamo. As you read, you will come across a variety of circuits that can be built at home.

They are typically made by manufacturers such as Philips-Lumileds, Cree, Seoul Semiconductor. At the time of writing, these LEDs are subject of rapid improvement. In 6 months from now, a new model of power LED Dynamo light will probably make todays most advanced LED Dynamo lights  look dim. There could even be new manufacturers pushing on the market with superiour LEDs. Due to this, I never recommend any specific part number for the LEDs. The driver circuits are not affected by the type of LED used, as long as it has the typical forward voltage of a white LED.

You might want to know what sort of light output to expect from the circuits on this page. Well, you will only find LED power here. To know the Lumens, you have to download the datasheet of your LED of choice and look up how many Lumens it delivers for the Watts you feed it.

In order to build a bright light, you have to pay attention to three parts: The driver circuit (better if it delivers more power), the LED Dynamo light (better if they produce more Lumens per Watt), and the optics / reflectors / lens (better if their efficiency is closer to 100%).

While it is common for the term headlight to be used interchangeably in informal discussion, headlamp is the technically correct term for the device itself, while headlight properly refers to the beam of light produced and distributed by the device.

A headlamp can also be mounted on a bicycle (with a battery or small electrical generator), and most other vehicles from airplanes to trains tend to have headlamps of their own.

Additionally automotive night vision systems work to supplement headlamps.

LED headlamp

Needless to say, I got one and loved it. For those new to LED headlamps, what’s great about them is they leave your hands free and you never have to think about aiming the light. If the power’s out, and you’re tying your shoes and then looking under a cupboard and carrying out blankets, the light is always right where you need it.

Also, for walking at night, a LED headlamp will light up just a pizza-size spot in the middle of the road, but this headlamp casts a wide swath of light completely across a small road, so you don’t have to scan for fallen limbs or porcupines – everything is lit up evenly and it’s much easier finding your way about.

The only downside to having the LED headlamp right over your eyes is when it’s foggy or snowing, since it lights up everything right in front of your face. But simply take it in hand, as a very light flashlight, or attach it to your belt, and all is well again. In fact, it works so that you can press the button in for when you want to check something, and then let it go and it’ll go off. Much better than clicking through the four brightness settings time and again.

So I loved using this LED headlamp, and then I accidentally dropped it in salt water when kayaking. Not recommended. The directions actually say you can wash it out with fresh water and dry it, but I didn’t get to it for a couple of days, and it had of course corroded.
