Here we have yet another environmental friendly gadget that runs without any batteries whatsoever. This time it’s something to use for your bicycle.

The splash-proof Bike Dynamo Flashlight 3-LED ($10) is the type of product where you have to wind it up to generate power for the LEDs (yet again no info on how much cranking you need to do to get some light).

It’s 6.5cm long and can be removed from the holder and function as a handy flashlight. There are three different modes to choose from: 1-LED, 3-LED and Flashing 3-LED.

Recently, flashlights which use light-emitting diodes (LEDs) instead of conventional lightbulbs have become available. LEDs have existed for decades, mainly as low-power indicator lights. In 1999, Lumileds Corporation of San Jose, CA, introduced the Luxeon LED, a high-power white-light emitter. For the first time this made possible LED flashlights with power and running time better than some incandescent lights. The first Luxeon LED flashlight was the Arc LS in 2001.

LEDs can be significantly more efficient at lower power levels and so use less battery energy than ordinary lightbulbs. Such flashlights have longer battery lifetimes, in some cases hundreds of hours, although the LED efficiency advantage diminishes at higher power levels. LEDs also survive sharp blows that often break conventional lightbulbs.

LED flashlights are often electronically regulated to maintain constant light output as the batteries fade. By contrast a non-regulated flashlight becomes progressively dimmer, sometimes spending much of the total running time below 50 percent brightness level.

A common misconception about LED-based flashlights is that they generate no heat. While lower-power LED flashlights generate little heat, more powerful LED lights do generate significant amounts of heat – although not as radiant energy, as the semiconductor junction inherently dissipates heat. For this reason higher-powered LED flashlights usually have aluminum bodies and can become quite warm during use. The use of aluminum is largely due to its thermal properties, acting as a heatsink for the high-power LED. Very few high-output LED flashlights use a plastic body due to plastic’s being a thermal insulator rather than a conductor.

LED Headlamp Most Helpful LED Headlamp Reviews

A few years ago I thought to get one of these for hikes, night photography, and simply having a lightweight flashlight in my camera bag or for when the power goes out. I read up on them, found Petzl to be the best, and yet the complaints were that the Petzl model at the time had only one brightness setting, didn’t tilt, wasn’t water resistant, and had no red filter. A year later Petzl came out with this model, and everything had been fixed to perfection.

Needless to say, I got one and loved it. For those new to LED headlamps, what’s great about them is they leave your hands free and you never have to think about aiming the light. If the power’s out, and you’re tying your shoes and then looking under a cupboard and carrying out blankets, the light is always right where you need it.

Also, for walking at night, a flashlight will light up just a pizza-size spot in the middle of the road, but this LED headlamp casts a wide swath of light completely across a small road, so you don’t have to scan for fallen limbs or porcupines - everything is lit up evenly and it’s much easier finding your way about.

The only downside to having the lamp right over your eyes is when it’s foggy or snowing, since it lights up everything right in front of your face. But simply take it in hand, as a very light flashlight, or attach it to your belt, and all is well again. In fact, it works so that you can press the button in for when you want to check something, and then let it go and it’ll go off. Much better than clicking through the four brightness settings time and again.

So I loved using this LED headlamp, and then I accidentally dropped it in salt water when kayaking. Not recommended. The directions actually say you can wash it out with fresh water and dry it, but I didn’t get to it for a couple of days, and it had of course corroded.

Well, I had to order a new one, and what do you know - it came with a little sticker on it that says, “New LED Technology, +80%.” What was this about?

I dug out the specs, and sure enough, they boosted the reach from 17m (at Maximum brightness) to 32m. And not only that, but they extended the battery life at Maximum from 80 to 100 hrs. In short, the Maximum setting on my old one is now the Economical setting and lasts twice as long. You can really see the difference - the Maximum setting lights up a yard and the red filter is now bright enough to hike by, when before it was best for reading or up-close work.

Car vacuum cleaners have been around since 1868, and have changed dramatically as technology and production have improved. Whilst we all know of Hoover and Dyson vacuum cleaners, what about the other brands and inventors who have contributed to the history of the car vacuum cleaner?

The first car vacuum cleaner was the manual Whirlwind, which was invented in Chicago in 1868. It was lightweight and compact, but needed a hand crank to be turned whilst the car vacuum cleaner was being pushed across the floor. Despite the fact it was hard to use, inventor Ives W McGaffey obtained a patent for it in 1869, and it was sold commercially. As it was only sold in Boston and Chicago, and a great many were lost during the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, it is difficult to be sure how successful this car vacuum cleaner was.

The first patent for an electric carpet sweeper was made by Corinne Dufour from Georgia in 1900. The first patent for a powered car vacuum cleaner was made by Englishman Hubert Cecil Booth in 1901. The first powered car vacuum cleaner used an oil driven engine, and was pulled by horses and parked outside the house being cleaned. The oil driven engine was soon replaced with an electric motor.

1907 saw James Spangler invented an electric car vacuum cleaner using a fan, box and a pillowcase. As well as using suction, a rotating brush was fitted to loosen dirt and dust to makecleaning easier. This idea was patented in 1908, and then sold to WH Hoover. The first Hoover Vacuum Cleaner was the 1908 Model 0 which sold for $60.

In 1910, P.A Fisker patented the first electric car vacuum cleaner in Europe. This model weighed just 17.5KG and could be operated by a single person. Walter Griffiths, another Englishman, patented a manually powered carpet cleaner in 1905 which used a bellows like device to suck up dust through a pipe. Various nozzles could be fitted to the pipe, making this the first patent to resemble a modern car vacuum cleaner.

Car vacuum cleaners were introduced over 80 years ago, and are still going strong, and have hardly changed in design. They are only ever sold by salespeople who demonstrate the car vacuum cleaner in the home of a potential customer. The power and versatility of a Car vacuum cleaner can clearly be seen, and this is a very effective method of selling. They are supplied with many attachments and accessories, and have a legendary ability to vacuum up dust from carpets, bedding and furniture, as well as cleaning carpets and wooden floors. Whilst they are may be seen as an expensive investment, they can replace additional floor cleaners and last for years. In addition, Kirby spares and accessories are available for older models. This ensures that older models are not obsolete as soon as a new model is released.

Car vacuum cleaners remained a luxury item up until the end of WW2. Brands such as Kirby, and Hoover were popular and there were many competitors producing car vacuum cleaners.

Hoover has since dominated the car vacuum cleaner market, despite intense competition from other leading electrical brands, including Dyson and Vax, up to the point where it has become a genericised trademark like Sellotape or Aspirin. People no longer vacuum or clean the house, they “hoover”; they don’t buy a new vacuum cleaner, they buy a “hoover”, even though they may have bought a Dyson, Miele, Vax, Electrolux, Panasonic or other brand of car vacuum cleaner.

Miele was founded in 1899 in Germany, and produced kitchen products such as a cream separator, butter churn and a washing machine. The product range has increased to include domestic appliances such as vacuum cleaners, dishwashers, ovens, irons and coffee machines. Miele produce high end products with legendary German build quality.

In the 1970, experienced carpet cleaner Alan Brazier saw there was a gap in the market for a domestic carpet cleaner, and set up Vax to fill this gap. The first Vax vacuum cleaner was sold in 1979, and could wash carpets, suck up any spills as well as vacuum up dirt. It is little wonder then that by 1987 Vax had become the best selling car vacuum cleaner in the UK, and are still going strong today.

Electrolux was founded in 1910 in Sweden and the sales of domestic appliances including car vacuum cleaners grew rapidly during the 1970s. Electrolux is a manufacturer of white goods, and a popular alternative brand to Hoover.

Panasonic was created in Japan in 1955 and produces many domestic products ranging from white goods to telephones, televisions and computers. Panasonic vacuum cleaners are well respected and are regularly found in high street retailers.

James Dyson launched his first cyclone cleaner in Japan during the 1980s, and despite its high price, it sold well and became a status symbol. Introduced in 1995, the Dyson DC01 was the first Car vacuum cleaner to be launched in the UK. Several more Dyson models have followed with different features and benefits. As the cyclone principle has proved very successful with many models sold, there have been plenty of imitators. People still talk about Dyson hoovers even though they are completely separate companies.

Reflectors and reflective tape provide additional visibility (especially when applied to moving

parts of the LED bicycle light) and are mandatory in many jurisdictions. Pedal reflectors in

particular are very visible to following traffic as they move up and down; unfortunately they are

not compatible with most clipless pedal systems, although adaptors are available for some, mainly

older SPD models, and a few single-sided designs are available with built-in reflectors. In the

UK, where front and rear pedal reflectors are compulsory after dark, most cyclists with clipless

pedals are therefore riding illegally. The law is rarely, if ever, enforced, but could

potentially be used in court to reduce financial compensation if the cyclist was hit by another

vehicle. The CTC have suggested that the requirement could be waived if the cyclist fits an

additional rear reflector and/or lighting, but this was not changed in the last revision of the

UK vehicle lighting laws (which permitted flashing LEDs). Riders of recumbent LED bicycle light

have pointed out that the pedal reflector requirement is nonsensical for them, since the

reflectors point straight up and down in use, and are invisible from other vehicles. As of 2008,

California law allows white or yellow shoe reflectors (front and back), or reflective ankle

bands, in lieu of pedal reflectors.

Reflectives are visible only when in the beam of a headlight, and even then only within a narrow

locus. Importantly, they do nothing to light up the road. Reflectors are not a substitute for

lights.

Most LED Dynamo lights will work in either flashing or steady modes. Flashing lights have been shown to

be three to five times more visible than a steady light of equivalent brightness. But it has been

found that people tend to underestimate the distance to flashing lights and that drunken drivers

are attracted by them, and there is evidence that they are harder to place than a steady light.

Some LED Dynamo lights have multiple banks of LEDs allowing both flashing and steady light at once. This

can also be achieved by having one flashing light and one steady one.

In many countries, LED Dynamo light flashers are the norm for rear lights. In others such as

Germany flashing lights are forbidden by law. In the UK flashing LEDs (front and rear) are legal

from October 2005. Many vendors claim EU compliance, however this provides no consistent safety

or legal value across the Union.

The most common power source for rear LEDs is a set of alkaline cells and rechargeable cells. In

both cases the battery tends to fail quickly when it goes; it is widely considered good practice

to have two rear lights in case a battery fails en route.

I have been slowly adding to my battery runtime vs brightness page as time goes on. In this chart

it becomes obvious that lights like the Photons, or other small coin cell lights, may initially

be brighter then lights that use larger batteries (Arc AAA) the light with the larger cells will

soon be brighter then the LED flashlights. This is also true taking the next step to “C” cells or

even “D” cells.

Another new type of light is the truly regulated light like Opalec Newbeam or soon to be released

Surefire KL1, they maintain the initial brightness for much of their useful life, not dimming as

time passes, and I believe this is the next step in LED flashlight evolution. This also allows us

to use any type or size of battery (Ni-MH, Ni-Cad, alkaline, Li-Ion and so on) and get the same

brightness, the battery type and size then just effect runtime rather then brightness.

All the images below are taken at 1/2 second with both the camera and light at 5 feet. Since most

of the lights use AA batteries I used the same 4 AA batteries and switched them between to make

sure they were all the same for these images.

Presently thereinto secrecy phase and unlisted LEXUS auto, tiptop grade vehicle LS-600 model will adopt LED Headlamp in advance. And it may become the first achieving LED Headlamp commercial vehicle model. For that it get attention from legion manufacturer.Merely, all circles are curious that how such LED Headlamp design could get over variety matter.
If using LED as the auto headlamp, the first problem is to solve dispersing heat problem.Essentially LED is partial cool lamp-house,which must obviate 90% heat energy produced during output/input electrical source conversion course.
In addition, engine drawing near dynamo exhale from heat energy.Plus the both, the heat energy may overrun 200 Celsiur scale which LED crystal material could not suffer from.
On the other hand, according to its appearance design sculpt and optics design,it causes engine interspace too incommodious.Which leads to there is no fan to dispel heat.Merely,at present this vehicle only use LED Headlamp as dipped headlight, and the headlights on full beam still use traditional halogen lamp or HID.
